As a man, especially a black man, i was expected to provide, my mother struggled and it resonated with me. Now it's like it's my fault when my family and the women in my life struggle. Furhermore, with Men we can become lost, we dont really have the "Sisterhood" thing, our "Brotherhood" often manifest as sports teams or gangs. Men usually need an excuse to meet up and be together, a gang is a perfect type of brotherhood, but it's an unhealthy one. The little 14 year old me who had no one and no resources, could of easily joined a gang that promised wealth, agency and power. Those things are attractive to young men. I remember being 19 having a hard time getting a job, I told my mom if I didn't get something soon I was going to rob a store. Ofcoarse I didn't understand rejection in the job market was normal and this was around the recession, I took things very personal back then. I'm happy I never resorted to that. The alternative is something like a mentor or a coach. A rec center, places that encourage young men to think, builds character and shows a healthy form or brotherhood.
