β17896340[Quote]
>>17896212Everyone knew Hiro was going to make the website worse, but I don't think many people expected him to let the website rot for over a decade. Most people were expecting about 5 years of data selling, ads, and heavy censorship to the point people would just leave and the website would just shut down one day. Nobody expected him to do data selling and poor attempts to sell ads. Although, back then we pretty much all thought of 4chan as a place that could be whipped into some sort of short term money maker. Turns out the website had a worse reputation than most regular users were aware of so ads aren't lucrative. The mods completely destroyed any salvageable brand image. The place is obviously full of bots and shills doing guerilla marketing, but a large enough real userbase isn't there to see the ads. If someone actually audited 4chan's traffic and finances, I think it would go under pretty quickly.

does 4chan break even?
They had to make the captcha incredibly obnoxious to sell more passes, but that also lowers the number of posts and makes the site worse. Apart from the passes they sell ad space, but if you ever visited 4chan recently you have probably seen that it's not exactly the highest caliber of advertising, mostly porn sites on the yellow boards and softcore porn sites on the blue boards. So that doesn't pay much probably.

>>17896619>>17896424Yeah the captcha is definitely there ro make people buy passes. One of the many things contributing to the death of 4chan.
From a new ip it takes you like 2 minutes to solve the thing. They have a 60 second timeout and then you have to complete 4 challenges correctly to pass. No one is doing that shit to post on a fucking imageboard. This decimates the number of posters.

The goal is not to improve the website, it's to extract money from insufferable idiots until they can't make a reasonable amount of money out of them.
I believe corrupt government money was flowing into the website as well, but my reasoning behind it sounds weird. 4chan is a great political tool to make right wing leaning people look completely insane. Not to mention the "it's a good way to trap pedos" cover story for its allowed existence. Pedos are pretty open about themselves on plenty of other websites, but that's overlooked when most people are talking or thinking about 4chan.
>>17896475Probably thought too highly of his ability to scam people. 4chan became a BIG name in 2014, and he likely thought something along the lines of "all publicity is good publicity" and that he could spin it in his favor with a relatively short pump and dump. I sincerely doubt he originally thought the website would last this long and drag its feet on everything.

The hack made it clear the site is quite literally rotting. They didn't update the software since like 2015. Hiro does not give a shit, i bet he forgets he even owns it from time to time.
He just tells his admins to squeeze some cash from the userbase and goes back to streaming or whatever it is he does these days.
β17896928[Quote]
>>17896767In the past it's likely what paid the bills and Hiro could skim extra off the top. After the whole USAID thing and alphabet agencies shakeup when Trump got in a second time, I'm thinking most or all political financial aid to 4chan is gone. Think about the timing of the hack and the seemingly deliberate attempts to destroy user numbers over the last year. Less users means less bandwidth, so lower operating cost. I think 4chan couldn't keep itself afloat naturally because it was being used and financed as a political puppet.

I don't think it'd be controversial here for me to say that anonymous websites are the best places to experience the zeitgeist. >>178972904chan could actually serve MORE of a purpose these days if it wasn't so awful and full of troon mods. People are getting more fired up about politics every single day. An imageboard is needed so normalfags can feel more open to talking about how they really feel, then it would expand more to greater social media as people grow more bold. But like I said, 4chan has completely horrible moderation that's actually very close to Reddit. They would be curating discussion if bans were reliable and took no effort. Oh, and if they actually spent time on 4chan instead of other social media websites. But the reputation and usability of the website is gone.
A different large imageboard would be nice, but I don't really see that happening now. People are being pushed to be more identifiable than ever before.
