Avoiding responsibilities and infantilisation is one reason. Most troons are MtF, and being an adult functioning male does come with its own set of responsibilities and societal expectations. Wether most of these are justified in this current age or not is a different discussion, but that's undoubtedly a gateway for some troons. I think both men and women are more similar than people think. A lot of their differences arise through socialization. Trans communities offer a way for youths that don't fit the mold to be accepted. The problem is that not even these people understand the true diversity of behavior males and females can exhibit, and pathologize diversions from the norm. Sure, there are men and women that suffer from gender dysphoria and desire the body of the opposite sex, but many modern transgenders do not fit this criteria - especially non-binaries.

At the end of the day, something I come across time and time again are trans men/female non-binaries detransitioning because they realized their desire to transition was to escape misogyny, not because they wanted to be something different. There is also the startling trend of autistic nerdy males transitioning into women; these males always have similar geeky interests that are likely socially isolating. What this is is an escape, an escape from problems males and females suffer from that aren't taken seriously. I also suspect that our car dependent culture isolates such youths, causing neurotic desire in transition to arise - it will give them the community they lack in their country.

This moment won't last forever. Sooner or later, the ideology will collapse and our culture will have to confront the real problems. Then, hopefully, both males and females will be free to be who they really are in a more open-minded, safer world. But we don't live in that world, so enjoy your fandoms and communities being savaged by these poor souls in the meantime.

this! the big paradox of it all is that they do this talk of "going beyond norms" but don't do the walk. they end up jumping from one norm to another, so at the end of the day they reveal themselves to be deeply interested in fitting a societal role. they just want it to be what they see as a lighter load on their shoulders.
note that this is how they see it and not how it actually is. there's a real deep connection between transgenderism and a light kind of sexism. this doesn't arise out of malice - if they really denigrated women they'd never want to be them - but out of misunderstanding: this is why mainly nerdy guys transition - they aren't familiar enough with women to actually know what they're like. and if they did, they'd accept themselves as a nerdier guy instead of a secret girl.
