Cool story. Back in the 1980s, I was doing geological research on an ancient coral reef in the middle of the friggin' Negev Desert, near Avdat. On a resupply trip down to Eilat, we stopped in to visit a colleague who was doing research at the aquaculture center there.
After she gave the grand tour of the facilities, she told us to bring our car around back.
When we got there, she was waiting with a bushel of oysters, and a bushel of shrimp. She told us they were only going to be thrown out, as oysters and shrimp are not kosher.
She also told us not to eat them in Israel, and directed us to Taba Beach, which at the time was a demilitarized no-man's land in between Israel and Egypt. The town had been depopulated, and everything was abandoned and closed down.
She said we could go there, make a fire on the beach, and no one would bother us.
So we did just as she said, made a fire on the beach, where my colleagues roasted shrimp while I gobbled down oyster after oyster until after dark.
Then one of my colleagues called me over, pointed to the water, and said. "You used to work with bioluminescence. What kind of fish glows red, orange, blue, yellow and green"
I said that none do. Organisms glow in only one color.
But sure enough, when I looked, there were five bioluminescent fish swimming below the surface. One red, one orange, one blue, one yellow and one green.
Salivating at the fact of making a major discover and getting my name in Nature, we were disappointed when the "fish" climbed out of the water and stood before us on the beach.
It was five Israeli frogmen, and the "bioluminescence" we had seen was chemical light sticks they had tied to their tanks to identify each other.
They sternly asked us what we were doing there.
I replied that we had been gifted some oysters and shrimp at the fish farm in Eilat, and were eating them here so as not to offend anyone.
Then I grabbed and oyster and demonstrated by gobbling it down in front of them.
One of the frogmen turned green and vomited right there on the beach. His teammates were so embarrassed that they just told us to carry on and crawled back in the water.
One of the best nights of my life. I ate oysters till I was about to burst.
