1.The Martyrdom of Saint Panteleimon, the Physician
On this day of the year 405 A.D., St. Panteleimon (Bandleamon), who was from the city of Nicomedia, was martyred. His father worshipped idols but his mother was a Christian. They educated him well and taught him the profession of medicine. He met a priest whose name was Hermolaus (Armolas) who taught him the facts of the faith of the Lord Christ and baptized him. He reached a high standard of virtuous life. God wrought great wonders through him. Once, a blind man came to him to be treated by his medicine. He made the sign of the Cross over his eyes in the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit and his eyes were healed and he regained his vision completely.
When the Emperor heard the news of his healing this blind man, he had the blind man brought to him and asked him about how his eyes were healed. He told him St. Panteleimon healed them by laying his hand on them and by saying, "In the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit." He confessed before the Emperor that he was a Christian, so the Emperor immediately had his neck cut off.
The Emperor ordered that St. Panteleimon be brought to him and asked him about his belief. He confessed that he was a Christian. He tried to persuade him by all means and promised him many things, but he would not change his confession. Then he shouted out to him and threatened to inflict upon him different kinds of tortures. But he did not move. The Emperor inflicted upon him severe tortures on different days, sometimes beating and suspending him and often times casting him into the sea or into the fire. The Lord Christ appeared to him in the form of Hermolaus, the priest who baptized him and taught him the facts of faith, to strengthen him, and walked with him as if He was sharing with him every punishment which befell him.
Later on, the Emperor ordered to behead him. When St. Panteleimon went to the place of execution, he prayed to the Lord Christ and supplicated Him. He heard a voice from heaven announcing to him what had been prepared for him from heavenly joy. The soldiers also heard that voice and immediately believed. They went forth to the Emperor and confessed their faith in the Lord Christ. The Emperor ordered his men to cut off their necks, too, and they all received the crown of martyrdom.
Their intercession be for us and Glory be to our God, forever. Amen.

Saint Herman (his name is a variant of Germanus) was born near Moscow in 1756. In his youth he became a monk, first at the Saint Sergius Hermitage near Saint Petersburg on the Gulf of Finland; while he dwelt there, the most holy Mother of God appeared to him, healing him of a grave malady. Afterwards he entered Valaam Monastery on Valiant Island in Lake Ladoga; he often withdrew into the wilderness to pray for days at a time. In 1794, answering a call for missionaries to preach the Gospel to the Aleuts, he came to the New World with the first Orthodox mission to Alaska. He settled on Spruce Island, which he called New Valaam, and here he persevered, even in the face of many grievous afflictions mostly at the hands of his own countrymen in the loving service of God and of his neighbour. Besides his many toils for the sake of the Aleuts, he subdued his flesh with great asceticism, wearing chains, sleeping little, fasting and praying much. He brought many people to Christ by the example of his life, his teaching, and his kindness and sanctity, and was granted the grace of working miracles and of prophetic insight. Since he was not a priest, Angels descended at Theophany to bless the waters in the bay; Saint Herman used this holy water to heal the sick. Because of his unwearying missionary labours, which were crowned by God with the salvation of countless souls, he is called the Enlightener of the Aleuts, and has likewise been renowned as a wonderworker since his repose in 1837.

Saint Joasaph came from the noble Skripitsyn family. From 1529, he served as abbot of the Lavra of Saint Sergius. He baptized Ivan, the son of Grand Prince Vasily Ivanovich, who later became Tsar Ivan the Terrible. After the prince’s death, Joasaph tonsured him as a monk. In 1539, he was elected Metropolitan, demonstrating his faith in the true God and refusing to yield to the pressure of the boyars.
At that time, when cruelty and violence prevailed throughout the country, Joasaph strove in every way to restore order, defending prisoners and those who were being persecuted. His efforts aroused the hatred of the boyars, so that he himself became a victim of violence. His life was placed in danger. Therefore, he lived in exile at the Monastery of Saint Cyril of Belozersk, where, after enduring many trials, he reposed in the Lord on July 27, 1555.
Before withdrawing from the world, the saint devoted himself to the correction of Church books, seeking accuracy of expression and fidelity to the truth in accounts concerning the lives of the saints.
The relics of Saint Joasaph are preserved in the southern chapel of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. His memory is celebrated on the anniversary of his repose.

Blessed Nikolai Kochanov, born in Novgorod to a wealthy family, showed deep piety from his youth, diligently attending church, loving fasting and prayer, and distributing alms. Fearing fame, he began to act as a fool for Christ, leaving home and wandering the city in beggar's clothes. The Blessed one rejoiced even in insults and beatings, praying for his offenders. He lived on the Sophia side, where at the same time the blessed Theodore was also ascetic. Both saints seemed to be at odds, but there was no real enmity.
The Lord glorified Nikolai with the gifts of insight and miracles. Once, a magistrate invited him to a feast, but the servants drove the saint away. After his departure, the wine disappeared, and when he returned, it was again filled in the vessels.
Blessed Nikolai passed away on July 27, 1392, and his body was buried according to his will at the edge of the cemetery. In 1554, a church was built over the grave in honor of the holy great martyr Panteleimon, but in the people, it is called the church of Saint Nikolai the Miracle Worker Kochanov. The church was particularly revered, and in the 17th century, on the day of the saint's memory, the service was performed by the archbishop.
In 1815, a carved tomb was arranged over the relics. In the icons, Nikolai is depicted in a princely robe with a cabbage in his hand.

The Holy New Martyr Christodoulos from Kassandra (+1777)

The new martyr Christodoulos was born in a village of Kassandra, called Valta. At a young age he came to Thessaloniki, where he made a profession as a tailor. When he was informed that a Christian Bulgarian was about to deny Christ, he procured a small cross and went to the café where the denier was to be circumcised. He passed through the crowd of gentiles, and while the drums were beating, he approached the denier, presented the cross and said to him: “Brother what is the matter with you, here is our faith, here is Christ, who was crucified for our love, why do you leave Christ your saviour and become a Turk?” Enraged, the Turks rushed in and arrested Christodoulos and with blows led him to the judge, where they demanded his death. To the judge’s exhortation to deny Christ, the martyr boldly replied, “… and you too leave the Islam and become a Christian.” Thus, proving his firm faith, he surrendered to the executioners, who hanged him near the church of St. Minas in Thessaloniki. The body of the saint, with the cross nailed to his back, remained hanging naked for two days. Then the Christians bought his body for 600 turkish coins and buried it with honors.
