I often hear it said ( most often by boomer and gen x rightists ) that America is a "Christian Nation", That it's foundations ae squarely and solely based upon Christianity. But is this actually trve?
The fact that those that argue in favor of this often ignore is that, there were several Founding Fathers who were NOT Christian. For example, Thomas Paine, Ben Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson were Deists ( meaning they believed in a God, but that was it ). Some quotes from the Founding Fathers regarding Christianity in America:
Thomas Jefferson: "Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law"
John Adams: "The United States is not a Christian Nation any more than it is a Jewish or Islamic one"
Thomas Paine: "Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and torturous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness with which more than half of the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we called it the word of a Demon than the word of God. It has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind
