What's one example of something, that's so overhated because of its popularity, that it loops back into being underrated?
I'll start. Final Fantasy 7. Everyone calls it the overhyped game, literally everyone. They blame it on marketing. They say the game just had a bloated budget and had le epic cutscenes and that's why it became popular. And people get mad that Sephiroth got in smash and not idk Terra or snca (someone nobody cares about).
But it really was an extraordinary game. Super unique setting, a weird cyberpunk-steampunk-modern-magical-fantasy that somehow works, environmentalist themes way before it was cool, one of the first black characters to not just be a living stereotype, one of the first games to unexpectedly kill off a party member with genuine consequence (a lot of previous games either had obviously temporary party members, or if one died, another character got all their stats/equipment). Incredible OST. Maybe the first instance of an unreliable narrator trope being used to its full potential in a video game.
I could go on and on but it's so groundbreaking in so many ways and still a great game in its own right. It's honestly the only FF game I was bothered to finish, because they're usually a bit bland.
