heartbreaking 'toss. In here 'Toss, esteemed political cartoonist and writer, author and artist delves into the tragic (perhaps one could even find inspiration from ancient greek tragicomedies) lives of troons. In a classic 'Toss, anti establishment move, the troons here are not just humanized but even romanticized, contrasting with previous depictions. We can see here the universally human desire to be loved by the MTF with "im so glad i have a bf ^_^"
Meanwhile the (presumably male) instead is bored and hinting at a future breakup "I should get a real girlfriend". the MTF here is desperate for love "im so glad i found a bf" whereas the male hints at abundance of choice. Furthermore, he mentions "a real girlfriend" whereas the MTF here mentions "sees me as a real girl". This is doubly poignant. the MTF wants love and is desperately latching on, whereas the male is looking to dump, ditch. He wants a 'real girl', whereas the MTF is deceived into thinking the male likes the troon and sees it as a 'real girl'. Perhaps he was using the troon as a rebound, yet the male is the MTF's only hope for love. Finally, "I really stooped this low" is the final nail in the coffin. The male dehumanizes the troon and dating itself, as if humans are mere commodities. "this low" is heartbreaking, the troon puts the male on a pedestal (finally found a boyfriend, he sees me as a real girl) wheras the male merely classifies the troon as 'low'. The tragic here comes from the dichotomy between the two. One sees it as a grace, the other as lowliness. Note the art style, emoticons, little emotions in the drawing. This humanizes them, they're REAL people, not just incomprehensible archetypes. this mirrors everyday life : you get trampled on witout knowing it. but exposed through a new medium: the dating life of troons. We see here the true genius of 'Toss. He has completely refined his art, exploring the absolute mathematical limit that one can explore human dynamics with humor, all in a one panel, two sentence comic.
Classic 'Toss. Bravo. Poignant, tragic, hilarious. Bravo.
