Everything I say, I say and mean truthfully and earnestly. I only feel the need to put it here because I have no personal confidants and I am curious to see if anybody else has had similar experiences, as I haven't seen this topic broadly discussed in real life or on the internet.

In short, I believe my younger sister is a victim of social media's glorification of mental illness, and this has, in turn, encouraged her to act as if she is mentally ill. It could be said that I don't know what's going on in her brain, and that may be true, but, judging by her actions, she is not clinically depressed nor meaningfully dysthymic. She has a number of hobbies that she participates in regularly. She willfully goes out with her friends on a near-weekly basis. Almost every night I am made to listen to her inane phone calls with her stupid friends through the thin walls of my home. She has never attempted to kill herself nor been committed to a mental institution. Her appetite is fine, but her eating patterns are unnatural and selective. This rules out anhedonia, consistently depressed mood, active suicidality and significant weight fluctuation. Thus, I can conclude that her depression is likely inauthentic.

A couple of days ago, while she was wearing pajama shorts, I noticed a couple of scratches on her leg. I am not downplaying the severity of her "injuries" when I say that they could not have penetrated beyond the first layer of her skin. To the extent of my knowledge, these are the only marks of self harm on her body. Her arms, lower legs and face are undamaged. This is what she had gotten my parents so worked up and worried about. This is what she is going to be prescribed anti-depressant medication over. It reminded me of a statement I saw put out by the administrative team of a gore forum I used to lurk on about their decision to forbid any and all photos of user made self-harm photos because it acted as a social contagion that encouraged even more people to engage in it for acceptance and attention, and I realize now how true that is. Some of my sister's acquaintances have engaged in self harm before and they received attention and consolation for it. Owing to the insatiable female desire for attention, she decided to not only engage in it too, but engage in it vocally, with absolutely no regards for the stress, shame and neurosis it would inflict upon my parents.

I remember the day my sister first decided to tell my mother about her "mental health", her desire to cut herself. It was delivered in a completely deadpan, monotone voice, and it was the first time I had heard my mother cry in years. After that, she was booked into a therapist, and, more recently, "upgraded" to some sort a psychiatrist (the only party who really benefits from this ordeal, but I digress) to help deal with her "issues". My parents are now forced to foot the bill for my sibling's plea for attention and apparent inability to silently cope with her objectively above average life as a white female in a middle class home with absolutely no history of physical/emotional/psychological abuse or serious mental illness. As I am typing this, I can hear my mother going through the cutlery drawers in the kitchen and throwing out all of our sharp knives. It vexes me to no end.

Over the past couple of months, I have felt a growing contempt for my younger sister that I can't articulate to anyone but myself. I have been nothing but courteous to her for, at the very least, the past 6 years and I have received nothing in return for it. I could painstakingly detail every single transgression she has made against me, but it would be very uninteresting and quite unnecessary in stating my case here. Her self professed mental health struggles are simply another manipulation tactic for her to do anything she wants to my doting parents; if they ask her to study, she can freak out and cry about being depressed. If they make a joke about her being the one who eats all the food at night (something she does frequently), she can freak out and cry about her body image. If they try and make her do anything, she can shrug it off and lock the door of her room and get away with it. She is always haughty and aloof unless she has something to gain from acting emotional.

I know this may sound harsh, but I have this inexorably strong desire to beat her severely, or at the very least chastise her for everything she has done to destabilize my cohesive family unit with her selfish, miserable presence. I'm not going to do it, but I wish I could. Even if I did, I don't think she has the mental capacity to understand why her actions are wrong, simply because she is so acclimatized to a life of luxury without meaningful punishment or strife that she would literally not know why I would be infuriated with her. that She exclusively cares for herself. I may be the same in this regard, but at least I know how to act in such a way that I do not always cause others to suffer at my expense.

Imo it can only be "fixed" with time

Its probably just an emo phase this is correct
>>93310If it isnt, ive observed in me and other young people addiction/bad habit induced depression, it isnt exactly depression but the internet and the modern world is so unhealthy that it causes unhappiness, misery and its simple that a chronically online shitty lifestyle causes unhappiness.
What differentiates this from depression is that, once a person quits modern bad habits like scrolling and generally the internet, goes outside, gets healthy sleep, diet, exercises, they are able to enjoy hobbies, enjoy life and be happy
While people with depression are always unhappy and miserable i guess

>>93219 (OP)>>93222There's really nothing much you can do for her. Your hatred however is not for your sister much, but instead how she changed. The one thing you can do is not give her any attention like everyone else, if your parents aren't utterly retarded they'll catch on eventually.
She's destined to one day become the boy who cried wolf and find out nobody truly gives a shit, at which point she might escalate again and genuinely try committing suicide, although more often than not they'll realize why it doesnt work.
The difference is that she's seeking attention from people while not having to return any, the people she's getting attention from dont truly care about her and only do so to conform to a social norm. At some point she needs to learn that only the attention from valuable people should be important, and that gaining connections like that requires investment on her part.
For now, I'd advise you to stop thinking or worrying about your sister and to pretend she's already dead
I've had a similar problem with mine, though not as extreme. Turns out women base their identity on who they're around, so if you're a ladies man or are on friendly terms with a girl you think is a better role model than your sisters retarded friends you can try introducing them.
However, because this is r9k, the above is quite unlikely.
