There weren't that many people smoking until like ww1. When you're in the trenches all day and you have something that calms you down in your rations, you probably weren't too picky about it, which is how a lot of people started getting addicted I guess. WW2, korea, vietnam, must have all had the same effect. Theres definitely a correlation between major wars, and spikes of alcohol, tobacco and drug usage.
Some niggas got addicted to them when they were cacas because they thought it was "cool" o algo, or just because they were destined to be retarded junkies. Same types of people that would get drunk at like 14. Nobody even wants to do that anymore, those people moved onto vapes.

My experience that the first cig is shit, but the nicotine buzz is so fucking strong the first time, youre not addicted to nicotine itself by then but rather the dopamine, so you keep smoking and eventually your body gets addicted to nicotine

I started smoking when I was 14 and in foster care. It became my go-to for dealing with stress and I never learned better coping mechanisms. I vape now so at least I don't stink as bad, but I don't know if I'll ever quit.
