I don't think my dad has ever truly read the bible past the 4 gospels yet he claims to be a devout catholic. He also thinks that the Old Testament is completely irrelevant to the Christian faith.

It's called Catholicism, and it sucks ASS

 3758664[Quote]

Protip: Most people don't read the basic scripture for their religion themselves, and if they do, they're mostly likely illiterate anyway and misinterpret what's said.

 3758667[Quote]

Does he like icons

 3758670[Quote]

Isnt this what Hitler did and they called it Positive Christianity

 3758671[Quote]

I remember I was speaking to him about sin and addiction and he seemed genuinely surprised that in galatians Paul says drunkards don't inherit the kingdom of heaven. He then said that his authority isn't of significant importance and dismissed it.

 3758672[Quote]

>>3758667
No he has no catholic imagery anywhere

 3758673[Quote]

>>3758671
It's too giga

 3758686[Quote]

He always brings up this one verse from Matthew where Jesus says "give Caesar what is to Caesar and give god is to god" or whatever as an excuse for governments to allow abortion and euthanasia

 3758690[Quote]

He also always brings up homosexuality and how it's "actually fine and ok!" Even though it is said across both testaments that it isn't

 3758695[Quote]

>>3758690
Whenever I try and tell him about scripture that debunks these claims he always just talks about the golden rule or whatever

 3758700[Quote]

>>3758653 (OP)
Catholics aren't supposed to read the bible. They are supposed to go to church and listen to latin words they don't understand.

 3758705[Quote]

>>3758700
Latin masses got replaced like 60 years ago and that's also just wrong

 3758713[Quote]

 3758724[Quote]

Wait no that verse is from mark

 3758728[Quote]

>>3758653 (OP)
Not reading the Bible won't lead you to hell and the new testaments is worthless without the Torah

 3758733[Quote]

I mean he is partly right, we dont follow most of the rules and laws written in the old testament and we dont sacrifice animals anymore. The old testament gives us history and the context of Jesus being the messiah.

 3758738[Quote]

>>3758728
Hell isn't something Catholics should worry about if they're following the Lords rules and teachings

 3758752[Quote]

>>3758738
Okay so why do you care then ?

 3758754[Quote]

>>3758722
It did thanks asking

 3758755[Quote]

Ok some of the things you described are worrying. I guess it just has to do with being a modern catholic

 3758764[Quote]

 3758770[Quote]

>>3758752
Because to understand the teachings of Christ and his apostles you have to read the bible!

 3758772[Quote]

>>3758770
Well he already has read it once no ? I think he can understand the overall message if I did

 3758775[Quote]

Not even christian btw

 3758798[Quote]

>>3758772
To truly appreciate and understand something you have read it over and over again. And yes the general theme of the bible is quite clear but to truly understand the word of God and his teachings you should not just read but study it

 3758806[Quote]

>>3758798
Well there is 356 days in a year I am sure he is just taking a short break

 3758809[Quote]

>>3758705
The catholic church refused to let the bible be translated for 1500 years, the first actions of every reformation monarch was to order a bible translation.

 3758812[Quote]

>>3758806
He has been taking a break for almost 9 years at this point

 3758826[Quote]

>>3758809
Having a single unified bible is good thoughbeit

 3758837[Quote]

>>3758826
yea because nobody but the church and a small highly educated elite can understand so the plebs have to trust the church's retelling.

 3758841[Quote]

>>3758653 (OP)
He's correct about the Old testament though.

 3758847[Quote]

>>3758812
Oh yeah that's bad

 3758875[Quote]

>>3758841
No the old testament is still important. The deuterocanonical books less so but the wisdom, history, and prophets are still valuable scripture to study for Christians as well

 3758881[Quote]

>>3758875
The new testament trumps it in importance though by a significant margine

 3758887[Quote]

i refuse to read the bible. sometimes i google bible passages just as a joke. to mock how stupid it is. its just like some person giving basic advice for everyday situations and making a bigger deal of it self than it really is,
