Why is the stereotypical German, at least in America, a fat Bavarian who dresses like someone from an Alpine village?

My mistake, it's either Bavarian jolly fat man who dresses like an Alpine clockmaker from the 18th century or an overly serious and methodical engineer type who's implied to be a closet nazi.

 3186932[Quote]

nophono wears this (especially not in the north), unless they're living on a barn hundreds of kilometres away from a bigger city, or when there is a special event. but even then you often just wear a regular suit.

I know. I doubt many Germans and Austrians even dress like that when going to an Oktoberfest event.

oh, we actually do, geg. doebeit, it gets less and less every year, just like with the girls' dirndls.

I guess that makes sense, seeing as the festival literally started in Munich more than 200 years ago.

 3186980[Quote]

but as to why, it is just like for every other country. just like we think of americans as fat, burger-eating, uneducated retards, or brits as stinky, tea-sipping, unfriendly creatures.

With the German stereotype in particular though, it's distinctly region specific. Most stereotypes are an amalgamation of different cultural artifacts. Like the stereotypical Frenchman wears a Breton sailor's shirt, wears a beret (came from Basque Country), drinks wine from Burgundy, and has the snootiness associated with Parisians.

i think there are two causes:
1. definitely the oktoberfest. we get hundreds of thousands of tourists every year just for this event.
2. bavaria just has a more "abnormal" and visually interesting culture, which is much easier to remember than most other cultures present in germany.

That makes sense. The stereotype of the boisterous and larger-than-life Catholic Bavarian is much more memorable than that of the efficiency-minded Saxon engineer.

because this is who germans really are, a wholesome people drinking beer and eating kielbasa. contemporary european germans had been poisoned by the prussian disease that turned them into a statolatric biomass. it's similar to the poles abroad, they're more self-independent and creative than the ones you'll find on place

I do think Wernher von Braun has a lot to do with that stereotype.

Scotland was not Saxon-owned; it was home to various groups, including the Picts, Gaels, and Anglo-Saxons, with the latter having a significant presence in the southeastern regions during the early medieval period. The Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Bernicia extended into southern Scotland, but Scotland as a whole was not under Saxon control.
