Also it should be reminded that this was the time of recession for a lot of german romantic art, the universities wanted a rejection of "kitsch" (word of jiddish origin btw) art.
Art that could be enjoyed by the dumb masses was apparently inferior and true art was what could only be enjoyed by analyzing the message behind it and the breaking down of social norms. It was the start of modern art essentially.
