I feel like this is the obvious answer, but when people, especially critics, use the word 'subversive', on the face of it it means 'subverting tropes/expectations/normalcy' but the subtext is actually that it subverts what is good. If I wrote a movie where the modern trope of a badass hero lady was subverted (thus making it a proper story about a damsel-in-distress), it would technically be subversive, but no critic would ever praise it as such because it is subverting something bad to make it good and not vice versa.

>>3131200Tbat's the thing because if subversive means making something that's widely acceptable then what is the point of calling it subversion anymore?
