Still closely related enough to interbreed though. IIRC, the running theory out there right now is that a massive volcanic eruption and the resulting effects on the climate or something along those lines brought our ancestors down to a population as low as only just over a thousand members. That's an INSANE genetic bottleneck, and it likely left the different species that came later with similar enough DNA to be able to reproduce.
