Long before he became known as the Messenger of God, Muhammad was known in Mecca as Al-Amin - "the trustworthy." Even those who disagreed with him later never denied his honesty. But as he grew older, he became troubled by the injustice he saw around him: the mistreatment of the poor, unfair trade, tribal violence, and idol worship.
Seeking solitude and reflection, Muhammad would often leave the busy streets of Mecca and climb a rugged mountain to a small cave called Cave of Hira. There, away from noise and conflict, he would pray and meditate, searching for truth.
One night during the month of Ramadan, when he was about forty years old, everything changed.
As he sat alone in the cave, a presence suddenly filled the space. The Angel Gabriel appeared before him and commanded:
"Read."
Muhammad, who could not read or write, replied, "I am not one who reads."
The command came again - firm, powerful - and then a third time. Finally, the angel recited the first words of what would become the Qur'an:
"Read in the name of your Lord who created -
Created man from a clot…"
The moment was overwhelming. His heart pounded. His body trembled. When the encounter ended, he hurried down the mountain in fear and awe.
He returned home to his wife, Khadija, saying, "Cover me, cover me." She wrapped him in a cloak and listened carefully as he described what had happened.
Khadija did not doubt him. She comforted him with words that would echo through history:
"By God, He will never disgrace you. You keep family ties, you help the poor, you honor your guests, and you support those in need."
She then took him to her cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal, a learned man familiar with earlier scriptures. After hearing the account, Waraqah said that the being who came to Muhammad was the same angel who had come to Moses. He warned that his people would oppose him - but affirmed that he had been chosen as a prophet.
That night marked the beginning of a mission that would transform Arabia and eventually influence billions of people around the world. The revelations would continue for 23 years, forming the Qur'an and shaping a community built on worship of one God, justice, charity, and moral responsibility.
From a quiet cave on a mountain outside Mecca, a message began - one that Muslims believe was meant for all humanity.

"Three men from those who came before you set out on a journey.
When night fell, they sought shelter in a cave.

Realizing no one could save them except Allah, they said to one another:
"Nothing will rescue you from this rock except that you call upon Allah by mentioning the most sincere deed you have done."
πΏ The First Man - Kindness to Parents
The first man said:
"O Allah, I had elderly parents and young children.
Every day I would milk my animals and give the milk first to my parents before my children.
One day I was delayed in seeking pasture and returned late. They had fallen asleep.
I disliked waking them, but I also refused to give the milk to my children before them.
So I stood there all night holding the bowl, waiting for them to wake up, while my children cried at my feet from hunger.
At dawn, my parents woke and drank their milk.
O Allah, if I did this seeking Your pleasure alone, then relieve us from this rock."
The rock moved slightly - but not enough to escape.
πΏ The Second Man - Resisting Sin
The second man said:
"O Allah, I had a cousin whom I loved deeply.
I desired her, but she refused me unless I gave her a large amount of money.
After years, when she was in hardship, she agreed.
When I sat between her hands, she said, 'Fear Allah and do not break the seal unlawfully.'
I immediately withdrew, even though I loved her dearly, and left the money with her.
O Allah, if I did this for Your sake alone, then relieve us."
The rock moved further - but still they could not exit.

The third man said:
"O Allah, I once hired workers. After finishing their work, one man left without taking his wages.
I invested his wage in business, and it grew into wealth - camels, cattle, and servants.
Years later, he returned and asked for his wage.
I said, 'All that you see belongs to you.'
He thought I was mocking him, but I said, 'I am not joking.'
So he took everything and left nothing behind.
O Allah, if I did this for Your sake alone, then relieve us."
The rock moved completely away.
They walked out of the cave safely.

Yusuf was a young boy who once told his father, Ya'qub (Jacob), about a dream. He said, "O my father, I saw eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me." His father told him not to share the dream with his brothers, fearing they would become jealous. He understood that Allah had chosen Yusuf for something special.
Yusuf's brothers were already jealous because their father loved him dearly. They plotted against him and decided to throw him into a well so that their father's attention would turn to them. They carried out their plan and left him in the well. Later, a passing caravan found Yusuf and took him to Egypt, where he was sold as a slave.
In Egypt, a high official (Al-Aziz) bought him and treated him well. As Yusuf grew into a handsome and wise young man, the wife of Al-Aziz tried to seduce him, but he refused out of fear of Allah. When he resisted her, she falsely accused him. Although evidence showed Yusuf was innocent, rumors spread, and eventually he was sent to prison.
In prison, Yusuf remained patient and continued to worship Allah. Two fellow prisoners asked him to interpret their dreams. He explained that one would serve wine to the king again, and the other would be executed. Everything happened exactly as he said. Before one prisoner was released, Yusuf asked him to mention him to the king, but he forgot for several years.
Later, the king of Egypt had a troubling dream about seven fat cows eaten by seven lean cows and seven green ears of grain and seven dry ones. None could explain it. The former prisoner remembered Yusuf and told the king about him. Yusuf interpreted the dream: there would be seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. He advised storing grain during the good years.
The king was impressed and ordered Yusuf's release. Yusuf insisted that his innocence be publicly proven first. Once cleared, he was honored and appointed to a high position overseeing the storehouses of the land.
When famine struck the region, Yusuf's brothers came to Egypt seeking food, not recognizing him. He recognized them. After testing them and seeing signs of change in their character, he eventually revealed himself. His brothers were shocked and admitted their wrongdoing. Yusuf forgave them and said, "No blame will there be upon you today. May Allah forgive you."
Finally, Yusuf's family came to Egypt. His parents and brothers bowed in respect, fulfilling his childhood dream. Yusuf thanked Allah for His blessings and for reuniting his family.

The Prophet salla Allah `alayhi wa-sallam then taught a powerful lesson:
"They (your servants and workers) are your brothers. Allah has placed them under your authority. So whoever has a brother under his authority should feed him from what he eats and clothe him from what he wears. Do not burden them with what they cannot bear, and if you do, then help them."
When Abu Dharr heard this, he felt deep regret. It is reported that he put his face on the ground and told Bilal to step on his face so he could be forgiven. Bilal refused and instead embraced him.

One day, a disagreement happened between Abu Dharr al-Ghifari and Bilal ibn Rabah.
Bilal was a formerly enslaved man of African origin who had suffered severe torture for accepting Islam. Despite his difficult past, he was honored by the Prophet salla Allah `alayhi wa-sallam and chosen to be the first mu'adhdhin (caller to prayer).
During an argument, Abu Dharr insulted Bilal by saying:
"O son of a black woman!"
This statement reflected the type of racial and tribal pride that existed in Arabia before Islam.
When the Prophet Muhammad salla Allah `alayhi wa-sallam heard about what Abu Dharr had said, he was deeply displeased. He called Abu Dharr and said:
"Did you insult him because of his mother? You are a man who still has ignorance (Jahiliyyah) in you."
The word "Jahiliyyah" refers to the pre-Islamic period of ignorance, when people valued race, tribe, and lineage above righteousness and character.
The Prophet salla Allah `alayhi wa-sallam then taught a powerful lesson about equality and human dignity:
"They are your brothers. Allah has placed them under your authority. So whoever has a brother under his authority should feed him from what he eats and clothe him from what he wears. Do not burden them beyond their capacity. And if you burden them, then help them."
This teaching completely overturned the social norms of the time. In a society where slavery and racial hierarchy were common, the Prophet salla Allah `alayhi wa-sallam declared that those considered "lower" were in fact brothers.
When Abu Dharr realized the seriousness of his mistake, he was overcome with remorse. It is reported that he put his face on the ground and said to Bilal:
"Step on my face until you forgive me."
Bilal, known for his noble character, refused to humiliate him. Instead, he forgave him and embraced him.

After the conquest of Mecca, the Prophet Muhammad salla Allah `alayhi wa-sallam entered the city peacefully with his companions. Many former enemies had just accepted Islam. Tensions between tribes were still sensitive, and racial and tribal pride had not completely disappeared from some hearts.
At that time, the Prophet salla Allah `alayhi wa-sallam honored Bilal ibn Rabah, a Black companion and former slave from Abyssinia, by asking him to climb on top of the Ka'bah and call the Adhan (call to prayer).
Bilal climbed onto the roof of the Ka'bah - the most sacred site in Islam - and proclaimed:
"Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar…"
Some of the Quraysh leaders who had not fully purified their hearts from old prejudices whispered among themselves. One reportedly said words implying: "Could Muhammad not find anyone better than this black man to give the call?"
Allah revealed verses addressing this type of arrogance. Soon after, the Prophet salla Allah `alayhi wa-sallam delivered a powerful message condemning racial and tribal superiority. He said:
"O people, Allah has removed from you the pride of the days of ignorance and boasting about ancestors. People are only of two types: a righteous believer who is honorable before Allah, and a sinful person who is miserable before Allah. All people are the children of Adam, and Adam was created from dust."

Some people tried to justify the argument by saying it was just a small dispute. But the Prophet salla Allah `alayhi wa-sallam did not minimize it. He understood how quickly tribal pride could grow and destroy unity.
He reminded them that Islam came to remove these divisions - not to recreate them under new names.

In another narration, the Prophet salla Allah `alayhi wa-sallam warned that those who boast about their forefathers should stop, or they will be less important in the sight of Allah than a beetle that rolls dung with its nose.
This was a shocking statement for people who measured their entire worth by lineage and tribe.

One day, some companions were sitting together and speaking about their backgrounds and tribes. Among them was Salman al-Farisi, who was Persian (non-Arab). Salman had traveled far in search of the truth before accepting Islam. He had been enslaved and later freed.
During the conversation, one man began boasting about his Arab lineage and said words implying that Arabs were superior to non-Arabs. In some narrations, he dismissed Salman's background because he was not Arab.
When the Prophet Muhammad salla Allah `alayhi wa-sallam heard this type of talk, he became upset and corrected them strongly.
He said:
"Salman is from us - from the people of my household (Ahl al-Bayt)."
By saying this, the Prophet salla Allah `alayhi wa-sallam gave Salman the highest honor - linking him to his own family - not because of race, tribe, or blood, but because of faith and righteousness.
In other teachings, the Prophet salla Allah `alayhi wa-sallam made the principle clear:
"There is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, nor of a non-Arab over an Arab, except by righteousness."
With one statement, the Prophet salla Allah `alayhi wa-sallam destroyed the idea that ethnicity determines worth.

He went to a monk and asked,
"Can I be forgiven?"
The monk replied, "No."

Still desperate for forgiveness, he searched for someone more knowledgeable. He was directed to a scholar. He asked:
"Can I be forgiven after killing 100 people?"
The scholar said:
"Who stands between you and repentance? Of course you can. But leave this evil land and go to a righteous town where people worship Allah. Worship with them."
So the man set out toward the good town. But halfway there, he died.
Then the angels of mercy and the angels of punishment argued over him.
The angels of mercy said: "He came repentant, seeking Allah."
The angels of punishment said: "He never did a single good deed."
Allah commanded them to measure the distance between the two lands. He was found closer to the righteous town by a small distance, so he was forgiven.
Some narrations mention that Allah caused the earth to shift slightly so he would be closer to the land of righteousness.

There was no bucket available. So she removed her shoe, tied it with her head covering, lowered it into the well, filled it with water, and gave the dog a drink.

Allah will tell him again to go and enter. This will happen a few times.
Finally, Allah will say to him:
"For you is the like of the world and ten times as much."
The man will say, in amazement:

Then Allah will say:
"I am not mocking you, but I have power over all things."
And that man - the last to enter Paradise - will receive ten times the value of this entire world.
