I strongly dislike Christianity but Christian churches are so beautiful (especially here in Italy) that when I visit them I almost feel ashamed of being an atheist. I have visited countless churches all around Europe, probably more than anyone else on this board, and yet they never cease to amaze me.

Two main reasons
1. The idea of God as a perfect being doesn't make sense to me. A perfect being wouldn't do anything, because he wouldn't feel the need to do anything, as he is already perfect. Therefore, a perfect being would feel no need to create the universe or do anything at all, really.
2. Christian ethics are based on trying to behave like Christ (duh), which feels like an absurd ethical system. Let's imagine a society in which everyone does nothing but pray and live a very basic type of life. Wouldn't this be awful? Aren't us humans created to achieve great things? Shouldn't we try to create beautiful pieces of art and improve our material conditions? I just can't stand the idea of living like St Francis, it seems anti-human to me. Excessive altruism is just as bad as excessive egoism.

>Christian ethics are based on trying to behave like Christ
No they're not, who told you that? Christian morals are based on the things that He told us to do, not on trying to emulate what He did.
>Let's imagine a society in which everyone does nothing but pray
The Bible does not say that everyone should do nothing but pray.

Living like Christ does not necessarily mean replicating His life here on Earth exactly. Though some may choose to do that, and it is admirable. Christ is God Incarnate, and He did embody perfect moral behavior and thought. But when we are called to be Christ-like, it it really means to embody the character of Christ rather than his exact lifestyle. Christ never worked as a software engineer, for example. But He does instructs us to work hard and with your heart toward God. So we can use that to determine what Christ-like behavior is like in modern society. The same thinking can be applied to those striving to be great men of history. The greatest achievements in human history have been achieved for the sake of the Glory of God, after all.

 â„–2932730[Quote]

>>2932723
how do you know he never worked as a software engineer

 â„–2932734[Quote]

But aren't people like St Francis the ideal Christian man? He is a saint, after all.

But thats what you posted though - pieces of art
No one's forcing you to follow Christianity to the letter, you can defend your country, you can kill if you have to, you can eat and drink whatever you want as long as it doesn't conflict with universal morals, you can be a part of something which can build a better future for your children or otherwise, religion is what brings people together and comes in handy in times of hardship, rarely does it take center stage

If you lived in your parents basement and did nothing all day but technically survived, would you consider that perfect? There's nothing and no opportunity to prove yourself as perfect. But because you know you're perfect, you know you can go and do stuff.

That is an interesting theological question, I think it would be worth asking a priest about if you are genuinely interested on finding an answer.

Don't take things too literally. I'm not saying that Christians should live a 1:1 replica of Christ's life. I'm just saying that an "ora et labora" (pray and labor) kind of life, if applied to all of humanity, would make us miserable.

"Christian views on poverty and wealth vary. At one end of the spectrum is a view which casts wealth and materialism as an evil to be avoided and even combated. At the other end is a view which casts prosperity and well-being as a blessing from God."
You have to admit that at least SOME Christians see poverty as a virtue. Christ was poor and many saints were poor. And "ora et labora" refers to agricultural work for basic self-sustenance, not participating in the global division of labor.

Maybe? I don't really think so. Let's consider, for example, Liverpool's Three Graces (picrel). They were built between 1903 and 1916. This was pretty much just 100 years ago. I don't think people in the UK 100 years ago were much more spiritual than they are now.
Something happened after WWII. Something bad.
