>>2897163 (OP)Just be a decent human being lol, but really you shouldn't do whatever you want with other people because it sets a bad precedent, not really a universal morality but just common decency.

From an evolutionary standpoint there are actually a lot of potential explanations for it, but setting those aside it also seems to be a natural result of higher intelligence. Whales will protect smaller animals from predators, rats will consistently choose to save a trapped cagemate over food, there's a wide variety of accounts of intelligent animals displaying what certainly seems like empathy. At a certain level of awareness it seems like animals become able to imagine what it would be like if they were the ones suffering, and a lot of them seemingly choose to act on it

â„–2897219[Quote]
>>2897173>>2897208But this doesn't justify it. It's just a feeling, no different from any other.
â„–2897222[Quote]
>>2897208In regards to the whale, I believe it's more out of spite then anything, if I'm not wrong things like Orcas tend to attack baby whales, so of course adult whales would want to fuck with them, they don't give a shit about who they're protecting really, as for the rat… That's just kin, two rats can probably work together and find more food then just taking the food that's in front of them, and if you think intelligence = empathy, dolphins.

because you don't want to suffer, that's about it

the OP should differentiate between morality that is objectively beneficious (eg. helping others in distress) and morality that only gives the guidelines to organizing social life (eg. sexuality), though
>>2897219it's justified from the evolutionary standpoint, as it guarantees survival of the species without permanently straining the ones who are helping
â„–2897243[Quote]
>>2897219>>2897222My point was moreso that it doesn't seem to be limited to just us, there's probably some underlying threshold for it, and if it weren't beneficial in the long run evolution would have nuked it by now. I should clarify that in my comments about intelligence, I was moreso referring to animals that are very social to begin with.
And yeah, dolphins are a VERY notable exception, I'm all too familiar with the shit they get up to.
â„–2897251[Quote]
>>2897243You're not wrong, empathy (among the species) just improves social cohesion and cooperation in general, I don't think anyone is arguing against that, but yes out group empathy has proven evolutionary purpose, we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for all the wholesome animalrinnos that we domesticated and still feel for.
