20th century communism as an ideology is built on envy. That is not to say that the capitalist class of that time was not evil in their own right. Non-the-less, an ideology that built on envy can only stay somewhat cohesive while there are people to be envious of, when they are all killed or driven out, those "revolutionaries" will turn on each other. Additionally if you didn't know, communists in Russia and other countries would very often open up prisons and let out serial killers, rapists etc free to cause chaos. Secondly, communism hates the past as it can cause people to doubt the "glorious worker's paradise" that these revolutionaries are building. As the picrel shows, whatever you may think of Orthodoxy, it has been a part of Russian culture and daily life since the 7-8th century and these people just had to destroy churches and monasteries that could be over a thousand years old.
