THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. - Two Lacey parents learned their fate in Thurston County Superior Court Monday for the brutal assault of their daughter outside her school.
Ihsan and Zahraa Ali had previously been accused of trying to kill their then 17-year-old daughter near a bus stop outside Timberline High School in October 2024.
Multiple witnesses reported seeing Mr. Ali trying to strangle his daughter to the point she had a seizure and became unconscious as several students tried to stop him. Eventually adult bystanders were able to pry the teenage victim from her father's grasp.
The initial investigation indicated Mr. Ali may have threatened his daughter with a so-called "honor killing" for refusing to go to Iraq for an arranged marriage to an older man, but prosecutors later wrote in court documents, "There is no express evidence that such was the motivation of either defendant in this case."
After three days of deliberations, a jury found both parents not guilty of attempted murder in July.
However, the girl's father, Ihsan Ali, was found guilty of assault and unlawful imprisonment. The mother, Zahraa Ali, was only found guilty of violating a court order, but she was determined to be not guilty of attempted murder, unlawful imprisonment or assault.
Judge Christine Schaller sentenced Mr. Ali to the maximum penalties allowed for each charge he was convicted of, which includes 14 months for assault in the second degree, 12 months for unlawful imprisonment and 364 days for assault in the fourth degree, with 182 days suspended, for a total of about 20 months for all the charges he's been convicted of. The sentence also takes into account state sentencing guidelines for Mr. Ali's offender score and the time he's already served since being in custody.

Mr. Ali will also be required to complete a domestic violence evaluation and take a parenting class, and the judge issued a 10-year no contact order for the victim, as well as a 24-month no contact order for the victim's boyfriend who was also assaulted during the incident.
Judge Schaller sentenced Mrs. Ali to 364 days for violating a court order, with 83 days suspended for 24 months. Mrs. Ali is also to have no contact with the victim's boyfriend for 24 months. Mrs. Ali had previously been trespassed from Timberline High School and a protection order had been issued for the victim's boyfriend after a previous incident at the school.

During the sentencing hearing Monday, the victim read an emotional statement detailing how she lived in a home of abuse.
"You think I'm a disgusting human being, well I think you're a disgusting monster," she said. "How can you call yourself a father, you tried to kill me, my dad tried to kill me with his own hands, do you have no love for me?"
"I know you were smiling when you choked me," she added. "I'm going to pray for you to stay in jail and die."
In the statement, the victim also called her mother a bad mother who didn't help her as the assault was happening. Mrs. Ali was seen crying as her daughter read her statement in court.
KOMO News spoke with the victim outside of court, who wishes to remain anonymous.
"I wouldn't say I'm glad that it happened, but I'm glad that I'm away from the situation," she said. "I'm glad I'm here. I'm still alive. I'm doing things that I'm moving on, but it's hard to really let go from this family."
