Baal should be more of taken as an idea, not a literal deity (although xhe is probably a demon that was directly worshipped in the middle east). Xis whole premise is that you should offer the life of your children in return for some material gain (back then it would be fertile fields and cattle, but now it is career), but in actuality you get nothing in return than crushing depression and insanity at what you did. Today this is accomplished by abortion and people deciding to not have kids or deciding to be sterilized.
