Yeah Saint Nicholas was a real guy but all of the lore regarding Santa is directly taken from Norse Mythology. The reason he has 8 reindeer is a reference to Sleipnir's (Odin's horse) eight legs. Which he'd ride across the sky (sound familiar?). Odin would give gifts such as toys and candy to children who left carrots and snacks for Sleipnir during his Yule Hunt as a token of gratitude. Even the name of the reindeer (Such as Donder & Blitzen which is Germanic for lightning and Thunder)

Exactly, it's a non-Christian figure forced into Christmas to make it another nothing holiday to sell goyslop to the masses. I'm not necessarily opposed to pagan traditions being part of the holiday, but Santa is such a blatant attempt to take peoples attention away from the fact that the holiday is about Christ's birth. If you asked the average kid, they probably wouldn't even know that is what Christmas is.
