Considering the fact that European hunter-gatherers were 6 feet tall on average, I have a really wild guess with no evidence that the myth stems from the fact that early humans witnessed firsthand how people became midgets as soon as they switched to grain-fed diet, and that tale got carried through generations, centuries, millennia even, and then people connected the dots and concluded that humans are getting smaller and smaller and that the first men were giants.
