Why did Europeans colonize Africa and build cities there, knowing full damn well that you can't civilize them and that the infrastructure will not be maintained and destroyed?

The real reason was pride. No empire wanted to be seen as laying back and not doing anything while the other powers were laying claim to all of Africa. Especially not in the age of nationalism. Redditors will tell you it was to exploit the poor heckin niggerinos and their resources but in reality none of the colonies were profitable other than noth africa and south africa (funnily enough, the only places not completely inhabited by niggers)
