To begin with, It's a branch of the indo-european religious group which means it is cousins with european pagan religions and Hinduism, but it's the only branch which is monotheistic, and furthermore, the main god, Ahura Mazda is not a variant of "Dyeus Phter" like it is usually with gods like Zeus and Jupiter and Tyr (Odin).

Probably the funniest thing is that the religion developed from the proto-indo-iranian branch, making it closely related to Hinduism, but all of the gods and deities in Hindu religion are actually demons in Zoroastrianism, and vice versa. This essentially makes it the anti-Hindu religion.

It is not monotheistic, at its core it is polytheistic. For most of history, Zoroastrianism has acknowledged the existence of other deities and sometimes even encouraged it's followers to worship these "deities". This makes Zoroastrianism a form of Paganism, since it does not preach that Allah is the only god of the universe. There existed truly monotheistic Zoroastrians, however many of these people were actually ancient Muslims misattributed as Zoroastrians. Even for the monotheistic Zoroastrians that could not be described as Muslim, they were often seen as religious rebels by their contemporaries. Zoroastrianism is at best a form of Henotheism/Monolatry, which is still a form of Polytheism NOT Monotheism, thus it is a pagan cult and they are most certainly not people of the book. Every time I think about how we extinguished their pagan eternal fire idols, I smile.
