Today, The Royal Palace of Norway has announced that its reigning monarch, King Harald V, has died at the age of 89. His Majesty passed peacefully at 6:35 local time on August 28th at the Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet.
Harald V ascended to the throne in 1991 after the death of his father, King Olav V. He was Europe’s oldest reigning monarch at the time of his death and had refused to abdicate despite declining health in his later years. His son, formerly Crown Prince Haakon (age 53), has immediately succeeded him as King Haakon VIII of Norway. Haakon’s daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, is now heir apparent to the throne.
