Season 1-3 Family guy mirrored an Old TV show from the 1970s called "Wait Til Your Father Gets Home"
the reason it got sadistic was their show was canceled and picked up for another season so Seth and his writing crew said fuck it and followed 0 Censorship rules and somehow it became a hit. this is one of the reasons TV has become so dark and R rated in the last 20 fucking years.

Apparently the original was a nod to an old 1970s cartoon (for adults) called "Wait until dad gets home"
it was adult in nature but not crude just suggestive humor.
Then when Cartoon Network (Or fox or whoever first ran the show) said they planned on canceling it because it lacked ratings Seth Rogan had decided to get as crude as he could get without censorship and suddenly it got rave vevues. the first season wasn't bad but it kind of sucked, slow going, old style humor outdated.
it might be because of Southpark had push bounderies that he knew he had to adopt the same kind of formula to survive. and he didn't expect it to save the show. 27 years later and Seth got another 4 season contract until 2031.
