Zappa is absolutely dated. The lack of structure or focus and the random jazz interludes are dated. Also tbf almost all 70s prog rock is dated. The shit I like is dated aswell. But CAN and The VU are less in that they are streamlined. They are fucking sleek. The way in which zappa is dated is largely unnecessary fussion interludes and interrupting itself. Which all prog sort of did but Zappa its harder to ignore. He forced things into place that didnt belong more than the britisb or German bands did. Whereas there needed to be at least SOME flow for those. So as much as people complain about elp or whatever they had like chronological order and actual structure and like flow to them.
