When will Hollywood learn that by subverting the same expectations for years, the subverted expectations become the expected, therefore to make something more interesting you must subvert those subverted expectations?
For example, movies have been doing the "female character in very feminine role is actually strong and independent" schtick for years, and it's no longer groundbreaking or interesting. What would be interesting is if we have a androgynous brown woman with that sidecut who turns out to be really wimpy and dependent. Now that's unexpected and a refreshing subversion.
