I think that serious academic research papers are long partly because they want to be exhaustive of the subject and partly because the people writing them don't want anyone to seriously read them to obscure the fact that they haven't done the work properly and just want to continue getting serious academic funding (see: the reproduction crisis in science). The leftist layman (in this case dumbfuck average/"slightly abover average" grade achieving leftist) sees the length and doesn't ask why, they just stretch out what little they have like they've been taught to with high school and college assignments having word count requirements.
