The movie revolutionized the film industry in a way no other movie has ever done maybe besides Citizen Kane. But Citizen Kane is now kinda dated - don't get me wrong, it's still a good movie, but so many greater movies have come out that if you watch it for the first time as an adult nowadays you won't be impressed in the slightest. The Godfather, on the other hand, stood the test of time and is still an absolute masterpiece, in addition to the fact that it changed culture forever. Before Godfather, all the old farts who enjoyed high culture and stroking each other's dicks in a circle, they all considered movies to be silly entertainment for the masses, even Citizen Kane didn't change that. At most, they could forgive a playwright for descending down to Hollywood to shoot some flicks for quick cash.

So, you are one young Francis Ford Coppola and you want those snobs to finally accept films as a form of art. What do you do? Most would make a film adaptation of some classiccal play like Hamlet or some shit. What would be the result? The critics would just say "That's cool and all, you can entertain the commong folk (ew) with these adaptations, but if you want REAL Hamlet you have to go to the theater". But Francis wasn't most people. Instead he bought the rights to some shitty pulp novel about some guido gangsters shooting each other for pennies and turn it into a script that would be used to film the greatest movie of all time. And I'll be damned if he didn't make the greatest movie of all time. This one film has singlehandedly done most of the work to elevate cinema as an art form, all of that while being entertaining and timeless.
