I'm a first time cat owner and looking for any guidance for what-to and what-not-to do.
My kitten is three months old and a ball of infinite energy.
I've been trying to touch his paws whenever possible and reward with treats or scratches - today I was able to cut three of his nails while he was half asleep.
<
He seems a bit bitey.
I had to wrap the wires of my computer corner in spiral shielding and spray them with a bitter spray. Same with the ends of my curtains.
<
He does clean himself but he does smell like pee and I'm not sure where it's coming from.
I've cleaned his hind legs with a damp piece of paper on a few occasions but the smell keeps coming back.

Life time cat owner here.
I highly suggest you get one more cat for him to play with. 2 cats is the magic number and any more than that is just asking for trouble (they tend to form hierarchies among each other). Don't rush affection too much. A way to get a cat to trust you is by slowly closing and opening your eyes at them, it's essentially "I trust you" in cat language by showing vulnerability towards them. Another way is to make yourself appear as small as possible (like crouching) and only extending one finger towards them to let them smell it as opposed to your entire hand. I suggest keeping any wires off the floor if possible, same with the curtains to a certain extent but it's a shot in the dark for me as my family never found/bothered to find a way to circumvent curtain damage. As for the pee, he might have a hard time trying to find the litter box and resorts to peeing in some secluded corner so I suggest you check to see if you smell something odd in weird places. Their bowl type and placement does matter, you can either get one like picrel or an automatic cat feeder which has a similar design and prevents overeating. For the food and water bowl placements, keep them away from each other, having them at opposite ends of the same room might work if your rooms are big enough but to play it safe keep them in different rooms if you can, definitely get a cat fountain for their water as they hate drinking stagnant water since it breeds bacteria, trust me they would rather drink from some random rain puddle than a simple bowl of water. I suggest getting a roofed litter box similar to picrel 2 (I actually used to have this exact one years ago), keep in mind you have to be gentle with the detachable top part as the latches on those things break easily if you're not careful (I've gone through like 5 litter boxes similar to picrel 2 from the time spam of mid 2020 up until now). Something my family doesn't do that I would suggest doing is putting an air filter next to the litter box to keep the smell down, they obviously cover their poop and pee but sometimes they take their sweet time doing it and it can easily overwhelm a room, a non-neutered male cat's pee is ESPECIALLY pungent. The cat litter dirt also does matter but it's not super impactful, avoid getting any type of scented cat litter (it bothers their noses) and light weight cat litter (it leaves dust EVERYWHERE, picrel 3).

Thanks for the effortpost.
What's the reason for putting the bowls away from each other?
Currently I've kept the water bowl, kibble bowl and the food bowl right next to each other and it has worked.

I've wrapped my cables in spiral housing and sprayed them with a bitter spray - worked well with biting.

My current litter gets quite dusty when I scoop it up and shake a bit to find any chunks to dispose of but it's unscented.
My mum recommended slowly starting to replace the unscented litter with a scented one, why is this a bad idea?

Cats don’t like the smell of food when they drink water and they tend to avoid drinking water because of that, I forgot to mention that. I suppose the cables are fine if the biting stopped, you could just check on them every so often. The scented little would overwhelm your cat’s sense of smell since it’s very sensitive for them. The pee issue might’ve just been a mishap, you’re likely right in saying that he didn’t groom himself properly when he first arrived seeing as his new home was unfamiliar to him.

Well, I'll ne damned. You are right about that bowl placement.
I moved the bowl away from his kibble and wet food bowls, pointed to him where it is and he drank his full.
I'll be keeping his water bowl away from the rest from here on out.
<
But all in all, is there really a big difference between unscented and scented litter? Pros and cons, that is.
I'd think if I wanted to switch to a scented one, I'd be able to do it by slowly replacing his unscented overtime with the scented one.

>>7605
Scented cat litter pros: smells pleasant to us
Scented cat litter cons: more expensive, respiratory irritation for cats and will likely lead to them peeing or pooping elsewhere.
<
I forgot to mention in my previous posts that you should get a cat litter mat and put it in front of the litter box as the cant litter gets stuck in their fur and they shake it off.
