The show has that "it" factor if you watched it as a teen. Its meant to relate a lot to any teenager that is feeling alone. Also, it goes from a pretty regular mecha anime in the first half, to pure psychological by the end of the series. Its a real bait and switch, it makes you fall for the pretty standard concept and then makes it a whole lot more complicated.
If you could actually think for a second, titanigger, it actually has some similarities with your favourite anime. That too starts off more "normal"; you have some teenagers fighting giant monsters. By the end of it, it too becomes philosophical and unrecognisable from the beginning.
