It gets better toward the end. 5 and 6 are also a bit slow to start but the best in the series. I'd just force yourself through it, it really only took me around 4 hours

Umineko is a different story set in the same timeline. Some characters are related in a spiritual sort of way.
Umineko kind of sucks (in my opinion) but I would still recommend reading it if you finish Higurashi and really really like it
