I enjoyed it a lot. Tbh I don't have much to say about it, I think it's very simple and straightforward while still having a meaningful message (unlike a lot of other vague, pretentious bullraisin that came out 15-30 years later). The only nitpick I have with the show is that Tetsuro should've used his gun more often to defend himself, would've saved him a lot of trouble especially against antagonists that were gonna die anyway.

from what I've seen so far, I think the movie manages to condense the multi-volume manga/anime quite well and still being able to carry the same message throughout, even if it leaves out a ton of stories that are present in the original work

Tetsuro is not only older in the movie, butas you've nitpickedwilling to use his gun a lot more, even if as a result he comes off as somewhat stubborn
I also very much enjoy the presence of other quintessential Leijiverse characters in the film

I think that any real anime fan should watch the '79 movie at least once, and maybe read or watch a different Leiji Matsumoto piece like Battleship Yamato or Captain Harlock

I watched the 1979 movie yesterday and enjoyed it a lot. It was really cool seeing more of Captain Harlock and Queen Emeraldas than what is seen of them in the GE anime. Pretty much the exact same as you described it, really cool.

if there is one I would tell you to check out first, it would be the first one;
Galaxy Express 999 from 1979 honestly blows a lot of the overrated anime movies like Akira or Totoro out of the water

There's also other great series and movies from the Leijiverse, stuff like Queen Millennia or Arcadia of my Youth that are definitely worth checking out if you end up liking the previously mentioned stuff
