Perhaps I would actually say Mystic Square for that very reason
Its between those two

>>138091Fair, I'm not actually that much of a fan of the PC-98 stuff. There's not really much to work with, no?

>>138093The simplicity and lack of convolution of modern Touhou (the problem isn't that bad lately but still pretty bad) is what I like about it
Though I could see why people would prefer the post-EoSD stuff. I did for a long time (and still do to an extent)
№138096[Quote]
>>138095To be honest, I don't see the convolution. Touhou is really self-contained in that it's a bunch of smaller stories. It's not supposed to be taken too seriously, and I think people that do are ultimately missing the point. You're essentially given a setting and you're free to do what you want with it.
Obviously, there is some embedded political commentary from Zun's boomer socialist perspective, but beyond that it's just about "resurrecting" old Japanese mythology and giving it a modern flair, and generally the themes are somewhat hostile to modernity which is the overarching point. But that is not necessarily convolution. I just take every Touhou game as it's self-contained universe with some similar elements, imo.

>>138096That's probably a better way to look at it
I always just wanted to view everything as wholly interconnected and would get very defensive over small SNCA continuity errors since I'm a retarded nigger
I'll probably try and adopt this mindset the next time I replay
№138099[Quote]
>>138097What do you mean by continuity errors, I'm genuinely curious?
Also, it's *somewhat interconnected* insofar as it's one "world" but again, if you look at each game it's just [Zun has an idea in his idea and wants to make cute characters for the idea], eg
6: zun thinks vampires & westerners are cool
7: idk tbh
7.5: zun remembers oni exist
8: zun remembers omoikane and random feudal japanese court wars exist
etc
like look at the taoists/buddhists which are just directly lifted from 1000 year old religious conflicts

>>138128Even Rato blows his shit out of the water unless you're just obsessed with nostalgia. There is no sense of proportionality and he literally did not know how to draw. The console sprites are way better. At least Zun is talented and watercolors and sketches his stuff.
