I play 'craft on and off, whenever I feel like it.
I highly recommend playing any version before 1.14. You can play any you feel like, don't feel forced to play beta or 1.12 or whatever because heckin reddit does it. I play 1.13 normally, both on PC and PS3. I just like the atmosphere of the ocean. I'd recommend checking out a few versions to find out what feels right. Beta 1.7.3 is nostalgiafagged but is an interesting change.
The changes to trading in 1.14 are hard to ignore since villages are fucking everywhere and things like mending exist. It ruins the game and turns it from a survival sandbox into wageslaving for jews.
I highly recommend playing with keep inventory on. I've been called a pussy for this before but losing items on death adds nothing to the game for me. I grew up with terraria before 'craft so thats what I was more used to, and losing all your progress is not very fun. I generally play by building large structures, so not having to worry about items despawning if I die from fall damage or losing all my items in the nether when getting nether bricks is more relaxing. I also just don't give a shit about the opinions of those who play for only 2 weeks, rush the dragon and then quit without building anything major.
To get in the mood, just walk around irl honestly. I don't like looking at minecraft content on jewtube because I get compelled to recreate a minecraft build instead of make my own design. Once you find a building that interests you, it could be a bridge or something too, try building it. Don't try to make it realistic, if you think a deviation from the original thing would make it look better, do that.
