The player counts have stabilized, if you will, and it gets ~1500-2000 players on any given day.
A good portion of those are assuredly developers, and I think they'll bring about some gemmy vidyas as did those on Garry's Mod. It just takes time. A lot of time.
The documentation is fucking AIDS, but royalty free publishing directly to Steam, easy multiplayer networking, and the roots in Source 2 are nothing to scoff at.
Facepunch has shown they're more than willing to improve the game and take into consideration feedback. They're pushing weekly updates; ones with actually worthwhile changes, I'd say.
I predict that in about half a decade or less, the masses will have changed their minds on this platform, and will behave as though they took it as gemmy to begin with.
