Notice how this game has a more tangible and immersive atmosphere, even though it hasn't been graphically impressive for over 20 years? There is a bare minimum level of graphics needed to draw a player in. The imagination does start working on its own theories, but you need a better baseline for the imagination to really kick in. It's funny, because game upscaling AI kind of does the same thing. When you use it to upscale from super low resolutions and framerates, it looks awful because there isn't enough information for it to work with. But if you boost the native resolution and framerates to 4k 160fps and then use upscaling, suddenly the AI can make clear sense of the image. Our imagination needs more input data than the image in the OP displays. The N64 and PS1 simply weren't capable of that unless you used extremely cartoony artstyles, and even then, the Gamecube/PS2 could do a much better job.
