Use Legacy Update (avoid post-2020 updates, its just bloatware), install the latest working versions of .NET and DirectX to avoid compatibility issues, use either Supermium (Chromium based) or Nocturne (Firefox based) to browse the internet. Dont use Firefox 115 nor Pale Moon, the former is slowly falling apart and the latter is laggy, doesn't have a competent adblocker and it FUCKING SUCKS

There is also an extended kernel project for compatibility with modern software (forgot what its called) but you only need it for very specific uses such as wanting to install the latest version of Python
