I’d suggest CachyOS/Arch (use archinstall, don’t do it manually if you’re new), because I use Artix Linux with runit, and many programs brap because they’re hard-dependent on system’p

Do NOT use LXDE since it uses GTK2, which is outdated, and in general, LXDE had very little support and is barely customizable. I’d suggest that you use XFCE, or if you REALLY want to cut down on RAM usage, LXQt.

>>41398I see nuswah, i'll give archinstall a look.
>>41399I assumed XFCE was more stable whilst still being less taxing on memory, no? I've used KDE plasma before with 16gb ram and I really couldnt notice slow performance (aside from a few hiccups here and there).

>>41397 (OP)Definitely Artix for you. Also XFCE still gets updates while LXDE and LXQt are DNBs from what I know

>>41402LXQt consumes around 200MB idle, XFCE 400MB, KDE 800MB-1.5GB depending on how many thingamabobs you have on your screen and/or running in the background

>>41404Artix takes effort to set up and configure to work properly, honestly systemd has raped the Linux ecosystem to the point that other inits are barely usable and I hate it.

Artix

>>41404>>41406Artix sounded great to get away from systemDICK but I'd prefer not to have to jump through thrembillion hoops to get shit working.
I think CachyOS with XFCE environment is my pick, I appreciate the suggestions nuswahs.

Also KDE in Artix is iffy because the login session has a systemd dependency that can be bypassed with a shim located in /run/systemd, but again it's not very reliable.

>>41408Good luck, and I'd suggest trying out Artix sometime with your preferred init system since it sheds light on how init systems work and can honestly feel way easier to configure than systemd

Off-topic but PipeWire can be incredibly janky on Artix Linux with runit since it doesn't have a dedicated package for runit and runs as a user process unlike PipeWire on other init systems which provides packages depending on your init system

I'd suggest XFCE with dinit for your usecace if you're ever trying out Artix
