Can anyone point me towards a resource that briefly explains what happens in C before/during/after compilation?
Examples of things I have to know about:
-defines, other things that happen before compiling by substituting key strings in the code
-compiling
-linkediting
-post linkediting

You can stop the compilation of a C program at various points using flags (eg. -c or -E with gcc to output object files without linking or preprocessed files respectively). You can then inspect the output using commands like objdump. I found that to be quite helpful. Other than that, I don't know of any single good resource that would briefly cover all stages of compilation.
