Why can't they just make something with gold contacts that cup the balls? Or just get the manufacturer to skip the solder ball step and gold plate the chips instead? Why do sockets need retaining mechanisms anyway, just make the cooler hold them down. Hopefully memory chips being like $8 a piece will make this real

They don't hate you, I hate you for thinking a bus is fast enough for surface mount components like GPUs

What does this have to do with bus speeds? Just replace the solder pads with gold plated ones and make a socket that pressures the BGA chip and its factory solder balls onto them. Same interface. If that doesn't work, just minimalize desktop CPU sockets
