It is. Mostly by Nvidia. The engine is garbage for games unless you do a ton of things to it (that are conveniently not taught in graphics design courses sponsored by Nvidia and Epic Games) so you need a more expensive GPU to run it. The cost of GPUs spiraling out of reach leads the average normalfag into cloud gaming, so Nvidia can sell professional data center hardware for insane profit margins. What do video game publishers think about this, you ask? They think it's great. They obsess over piracy to the point they would rather destroy the quality of games with streaming compression, latency, and unaffordable subscription prices in the long term. They also like the idea that they could eventually simply remove old games from history so they can sell you low effort remakes every 10 years. The ability to keep mods from being made is the power grab cherry on top. Always remember: None of these companies are our friends. They want power so badly and genuinely hate you because they can't simply steal your money.

Pro tip that you need to spread: We're going to lose the war on physical games. Start pushing for actual, irrevocable digital ownership instead. But do not ever pay for cloud gaming subscriptions. Don't even use them if they're free. Cloud gaming is the worst possible cancer for the hobby in the foreseeable future.

Might be something to it. I asked the ole ey ay about pruning some shit off of the base engine and it's doable. You really don't need to hit the OOM and crash when using some tools on UE, you can dev with a weak card, but you need to script the changes in, first. Probably like that with optimization as well. But it's not a big issue, if you pace yourself and pick a type of gameplay that doesn't even require a lot of resources.

I'd imagine Epic Games only stands to lose from any kind of cloud gaming transition. At that point, those huge companies can whip up server-side engines under their generative AI layers and just ignore UE.

One good thing about cloud gaming would be completely not caring about the shape of resources you're using at any given time. Big battle and demands hitting 99x normal? No issue. But of course, corporations will make it suck.
