Friend recently gifted me his old PC but I need a monitor. Should I just buy some decent new one online or should I go around local goodwills to see if they have any cheap gems

Goodwill is awful. Horrifically overpriced and Jewish. They take donations like a charity and then sell at retail prices. They are known to base prices off of market value. And when things inevitably don't sell, they are auctioned off in bulk to recyclers or ebay flippers because that maximizes profit at their scale. It's made for goyim who find the idea of second hand things appealing but for none of the logical reasons. And (((non-profit))) means jackshit btw.
But yeah thrift shops are pretty good about stocking monitors. Look for ones in your area, sometimes there are electronic focused ones

I forgot to mention them but yeah I'm also planning to just check other thrift shops other than goodwill but I guess I won't be going to goodwill doe like you suggested

What parts does the computer have and what is your planned use case?
Generally, 1080p has been good for a long time, so you can get a monitor like that for cheap used
