Im new to computer shit, if I have a windows partition with 300+ gb of space free in a 1tb ssd can i shrink tge volume of a partition and convert it into something for a linux partition without my data being deleted or corrupted? Is it risky? Should i back up my seca or is it a relatively simple operation. Or should i just wipe everything on the disk and reorganize it for a linux half and a windont half?

just do it, resizing a partition is no risk and you can probably repair it if it fails
