I currently use LMDE for Normie's and boomers. Its comfy. If you want proton without steam, the easiest way is installing Lutris

Hopefully you didn't got the LOQ Essential like on the screenshot that laptop is crap.
For NVIDIA GPU on Linux, I didn't run into any issue on my LOQ 15iax9e beside the usual worse performance on DirectX 12 games. (Arch btw)
If you wanted Proton outside of Steam I would recommend Bottles.
And for privacy, I did ran into a few issues with fitgirl repack installer but I was able to fix it by using Proton + Virual Desktop.

Hopefully what you got isn't the LOQ Essential like in the screenshot since that laptop is dog water compared to the standard LOQ.
NVIDIA is working well on my LOQ 15iax9e, didn't run into any issue on Arch Linux.
For Proton outside of Steam I don't have any recommendation but I'm using Bottles and it works pretty well, for privacy I did run into issues with fitgirl repack installer but I fixed it by using Proton + Virtual Desktop.
