By connecting the display to a computer, you can do much more, like watching anything you want completely unrestricted by pirating that shit. Not to mention the privacy aspect of a smart tv. I'm regurgitating anecdotal evidence here, but Roku smart tvs have been reported datamining all your delicious personal data and would even refuse to let you watch unless you purchase a subscription to Roku; why pay for a tv if you need a subscription to even use your tv?
