>>32509here's more SNCA information for you:
http://www.hometheaterengineering.com/bandwidthcalculator.html use this site to figure out the maximum resolution your monitor can drive, put in your desired resolution (I found 1440x1080 was ok for using a modern desktop on a CRT) and put your desired max displayed FPS into the vertical refresh rate, it will then show you the required MHz bandwith
compare that to the spec of your monitor (you'll have to track down it's manual for that, good luck with that if you get some nophono name crt geg), if the required mhz is higher than what your monitor can drive, you'll have to tone down the resolution or/and the refresh rate
BUT WAIT this is where you realize most CRT's are fucking garbage. under 70Hz the screen flicker is noticeable to pretty much anyone and if you're sensitive, will cause you a headache. that's why you should shoot for a 75-80hz minimum refresh rate
the brutal reality is a lot of monitors can't manage that refresh rate at a decent resolution, so yeah, enjoy using modern windows on 720p resolution
so yeah, horizontal frequency is the most important spec, right after the actual screen size
<snca spaceanother headache will be connectivity, unless you have a retro rig you'll need an adapter, either a dvi to vga if you still have a gpu with dvi output, or the worst scenario, you'll need a dp/hdmi to vga converter
that's when you find out, somehow, they aren't common at all, or they are but can drive 60hz MAX, so you'll spend weeks looking for a quality one, pay a fortune for it, only to realize it doesn't werk. good luck. startech is the recommended brand but they stopped production on their hdmi/vga converters afaik.
<snca spacebtw you already heard this, but the diamond standard for crt's were trinitron's, it was sony's patented aperture grill tech which makes those monitors the clearest (the ""pixel"" pattern is a grid of vertical rectangles, as opposed to the honeycomb pattern on all other crt's). diamondtron's are the same thing, I think it was panasonic's copy of the sony tech
<snca spaceand last snca wisdom: gettign a crt is a massive gamble, considering all of them are older than any user of this site
if it manages to be functional in the firts place, there's a good chance it will have fucked up geometry, you can try fixing it by degaussing or by placing magnets on it, but there's a good chance the geometry will be so skewed and fucked up it will always look shit no matter what. and no, you have 0% chance of repairing the electron gun yourself
