If the US imposed vast sumptuary laws, it would become immensely more powerful. Imagine if instead of wasting money on pets, sports, betting, luxury homes, luxury cars, boats, expensive clothing, alcohol, or artwork, all that money was channeled into the investment markets or used to buy government bonds. There are many products and services which are objectively bad for society in that they are wasteful.
>What policies specifically?
Price ceilings in basic goods. For instance, no cars over 75k. No shorts over $75. No pants over 75$. No sneakers over $60. The goal is not to make goods more accessible, since that would result in shortages. The goal is simply to reduce wasteful spending.

All professional sports leagues are shut down. All betting platforms and casinos are shut down. All businesses involved in producing or hosting music, movies, uninformative shows, or entertainment are shut down. Ethanol can no longer be sold for human consumption. Boats must be purchased by a legal business entity rather than an individual.

Landscaping is another one of the most wasteful industries in the US, but I'm not quite sure how to regulate it yet. There are legitimate reasons to outsource landscaping activities. Perhaps nurseries would not be allowed to sell ornamental plants. Instead, only food producing plants would be allowed.
